We all like a brain-bending series and Maniac looks set to enter the pantheon of weird. We’ve had quite a few mind-melting series’ recently, the likes of Legion, American Gods and Stranger Things have all sought to challenge our perceptions and somehow managed to remain thoroughly entertaining.

Exploring the mind

Maniac is the latest sci-fi series from Netflix and sees Emma Stone (La La Land, Zombieland) and Jonah Hill (This Is The End, The Wolf of Wall Street) as test subjects in a clinical trial. Quite what is being trialled is unclear but it sends the pair into what Emma Stone’s character describes as “Multi reality brain magic”.

We see them in a Game of Thrones-esque fantasyland, as giants, in a 1920’s gangster theme and various others so we get the idea. They are hooked up to machines whilst on this drug and have their brains and dreams analysed. But is it a dream or have they accessed additional dimensions?

It would appear that they aren’t supposed to find each other but keep being drawn together which will likely be the key theme that holds the show together.

More than meets the eye

The synopsis for the series simply says, ‘An institutionalised man dreams of a new life in a fantasy land.’ The trailer certainly doesn’t entirely suggest that to be the plot but as it looks pretty crazy it could well be.

Alongside Hill and Stone the series will also star Billy Magnussen (Into The Night, Bridge of Spies), Sonoya Mizuno (Annihilation, Ex Machina) and Sejal Shah (Do No Harm, The Blacklist). In addition, the show is set to star some interesting roles from the likes of Gabriel Byrne (End of Days, The Usual Suspects), Sally Field (Lincoln, Forest Gump) and Justin Theroux (American Psycho, Mulholland Drive).

You can view the frankly epic trailer below.

We absolutely love the look of this series, whilst it may look a bit nuts it also looks like it will have a very strong story that will keep you hooked.

The trailer is so full of energy and emotion that you can’t help but be excited by the prospect of what this promises.

Maniac is set to be released on Netflix on the 21st of September 2018 and we can’t wait.
