If like us, you grew up with Manga Videos on heavy rotation then you will no doubt be familiar with Battle Angel Alita. Equally, if you love your Manga comics then the Gunnm series will certainly be on your radar.
This will mean one of two things when it comes to this movie, either you’re really excited or you’re filled with trepidation. Hollywood doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to bringing Anime to the western market and this looks set to be the most ambitious attempt yet.
What was that?
If none of the above made any sense to you at all don’t worry we’ve got you covered.
Gunnm is a Manga series that is hugely popular in Japan. In English, it was released as Battle Angel and was turned into two animated films released on Manga Video. Battle Angel Alita was by far the most popular of the two and has been a highly sought-after cult classic ever since.
The plot is set in a post-apocalyptic future where the powerful live on a floating city named Tiphares. The rest live in Scrapyard, so called as all the rubbish falls on the city from Tiphares. A Cybermedic discovers Alita in Scrapyard and rebuilds her. She has no memory but still remembers Panzer Kunst, a form of cyborg martial arts. She then becomes a bounty hunter as she tries to piece together her memories.
It really is one of the most enthralling and emotionally charged Anime movies ever released and the idea of it heading to a live-action/CGI environment with a massive budget is certainly intriguing. The big question is will they dumb it down for the western audience?
The latest trailer shows us the world that Alita inhabits as well as exploring her relationships with the various characters in the movies.
It is seriously impressive to watch and it looks like they’ve done an amazing job of recreating the locations. Alita looks incredible, although perhaps the eyes are little too big for the way the character was originally drawn, that’s just nit-picking really though.
You can view the trailer below.
Pushing the limits
Alita: Battle Angel is directed by Robert Rodriguez (Planet Terror, Once Upon a Time in Mexico) so it’s certainly in good hands.
It has been written by Rodriguez alongside James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar) and Laeta Kalogridis (Alexander, Shutter Island) with a Production team of Rodriguez, Cameron and Jon Landau (Solaris, Avatar).
Alita is played by Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner, Insurgent) and she stars alongside Jennifer Connelly (Labyrinth, Requiem for a Dream), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, Little Children), Michelle Rodriguez (Avatar, Machete), Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained), Eliza Gonzales (Baby Driver, From Dusk til Dawn the Series) and Ed Skrein (Deadpool, Ill Manors).
That is a serious cast which only gets our hopes up even more.
We have to admit its hard not to get excited by this project and the more excited we get the more nervous we become. We want this to succeed for the right reasons as it has such a rich story to bring to the big screen.
If the trailer is anything to go by then it looks like they’ve done it justice and that really makes us happy.
Alita: Battle Angel is released in the UK on the 26th December 2018
