The recent reboots of the X-Men have been decent and the next chapter X-Men: Dark Phoenix looks as though it could be the end.

The last movie in this saga was 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse which saw our heroes face the toughest foe yet. Little did they know during that movie that their toughest foe would actually come from within.

Those familiar with their X-Men history and timelines will be fully aware of Phoenix. If you don’t know already then the following will be a minor spoiler.

Dark Phoenix

Jean Grey, played by Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones, Josie), was taken in by Professor X, played by James McAvoy (Filth, Split), who discovers a dark power within her. She shares similar abilities to the professor and he alters her mind to keep the dark power hidden from her. Naturally, it unleashes itself anyway and she becomes Phoenix, a mutant with more power than even the professor. Unfortunately for the X-Men, that’s bad news.

The Dark Phoenix story arc is something fans have been crying out for and we are seriously excited to finally see it come to the big screen. Yes, we got a glimpse of it in X-Men III but honestly, it barely scratched the surface of her darkness and her power.

A Hero’s Return

Several cast members will be returning for this one including Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games, Red Sparrow) as Mystique, Michael Fassbender (Prometheus, Alien: Covenant) as Magneto, Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies, Mad Max: Fury Road) as Beast, Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One, Mud) as Cyclops and Evan Peters (Kick-Ass, American Horror Story) as Quicksilver.

If the trailer is anything to go by this will be yet another awesome X-Men movie. This latest series of reboots really has given the franchise a new lease of life, made all the better by the crossover of actors from the original trilogy in Days of Future Past.

The End?

The music in the trailer could well be giving us a big hint as well. It’s a cover version of The Doors’ classic The End which could either be signifying the end of Jean Grey’s alliance with the X-Men, the end of the Universe thanks to Phoenix’s power or most likely the End of this series of movies.

If it is indeed the latter we will be sad to see it go as they have been thoroughly enjoyable and we can never get enough X-Men.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be released on the 07th June 2018 in the US, the UK date is yet to be announced.
